Meet Our adjudicator Angela Rowley
My degree in German literature and language gave me a special love of Lieder and indeed poetry in any language set to music, where the music enhances the words and develops the emotional intent. My professional career has been in concert, recital and oratorio and my favourite pieces to sing are Richard Strauss’ ‘Four Last Songs’ with orchestra. That said, the intimacy of a song accompanied simply by piano is a sensitive and expressive partnership, drawing in and engaging the listener.

I want to hear an understanding of and commitment to the words and emotion of a piece. Of course, breathing and legato line are fundamental, but clarity of diction is so important. Added to that are the tonal colouring, word painting, phrasing and emotional expression – I’m not asking much! My advice is always, ‘Know the music then sing the words, not the music’. This is achievable by even the youngest singers. Most of all, enjoy performing - your audience is keen to hear you and I’m there to help!
